The number of protons in the nucleus determines the element’s atomic number and its chemical identity. For example, an atom with six protons is carbon, and an atom with 79 protons is gold.

On the other hand, an ion is an atom or molecule that has gained or lost one or more electrons, resulting in a net positive or negative charge. When an atom loses one or more electrons, it becomes a positively charged ion, known as a cation. Conversely, when an atom gains one or more electrons, it becomes a negatively charged ion, known as an anion. The charge of an ion is determined by the number of electrons it has gained or lost compared to the number of protons in its nucleus.

The primary difference between an ion and an atom lies in their charge. An atom has a neutral charge because the number of protons and electrons is equal, whereas an ion has a positive or negative charge due to an imbalance in the number of protons and electrons.
